Why should you care?

Not paying attention to subscriptions and hidden fees can end up costing you more money than you anticipate. These small monthly charges can seem inexpensive and affordable at first, but over time, they tend to accumulate, just like a snowball. Hidden fees and automatic renewals often result in you paying for things you never think to purchase. Furthermore, companies sometimes make it difficult to cancel, causing the subscription charges to continue. These future additional costs can strain your budget and deplete your savings. Staying vigilant about your subscriptions, including their actual cost, as well as hidden fees, helps you maintain control over your finances and avoid wasting money.

About the website:

Subscriptions and hidden fees are a way for companies to extract extra money out of customers’ pockets when done as an intentionally harmful and predatory practice. This can include increasing prices in recurring subscriptions, hidden service charges, and unadvertised monetary caveats. The website can be used as a tool to know exactly how much money you waste on subscriptions and the hidden feeds. Young adults can use it to see how these fees harm their finances, causing their money to vanish little by little until they run deep, unexpected budget deficits. The website also offers the option to show you how much a subscription will actually cost, guiding the consumer towards more conscious spending.

Hidden fees

Hidden fees are unadvertised fees that are typically automatically charged when purchasing a good or service. This comes in many forms like purchasable embedded advertisement removers in free apps, wifi charges at hotels, and additional per-night surcharges for pets at pet-friendly hotels. Hidden fees can be very misleading and cause consumers to become discouraged and fatigued when buying goods and services. These hidden fees can be anywhere from up to $10 to $200. In some cases where these hidden fees are not disclosed, class-action lawsuits can be taken against predatory companies.

Activation fees can count as initial deposits. For example, many dance studios will advertise their costs per class or their programs but fail to announce their first-time registration fee. This can be anywhere from $5 to $90. These types of hidden activation fees are found in many different types of services.

Service charges are nonadvertised fees for services. In the hotel business, these can be internet fees, food fees, cleaning fees, etc. Combined, these service charges quickly build up to rack up a final price that ends up way higher than what consumers are expecting.

Add-ons come in many forms but become predatory when they are excessive. For example, a game that is advertised to be “free” could have ads every 10 seconds and advertise their ad-removal package. Or, this could be at a gym, where certain facilities cost extra.

Auto-renewals become problematic when free trials auto-renew and charge the customer when their free trial ends instead of cancelling their subscription. Price jumps in auto-renewal fees are when recurring subscriptions (ex: Netflix or Spotify) gradually increase their monthly cost with minimal advertisement to the customer. This leads to extra money being spent by the consumer while being unaccounted for in their budget.
